TEXAS DISTRICT CONVENTION - JUNE 22-25
All of the Convention Workbooks have been mailed. They were mailed to
different groups at different times but our goal was to get the packets out
to the voting pastoral and lay delegates first.
We have had one box returned to us. Unfortunately, the label was partially
destroyed and the post office put another label over what was left. All we
can tell is that the package did reach the Dallas Post Office Distribution
Center. If your congregation has not received the package addressed to the
voting pastoral and lay delegates, please let Claudetta know (1/800/951-3478
or txpresct at txdistlcms.org) This one may be yours.
We do have some extra Workbooks. If you would like to receive a copy, let
us know that as well.

CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY'S REV. DR. GEORGE J. BETO LEADERSHIP AWARD PRESENTED TO
PRES. JIM LINDERMAN
President Linderman was awarded the Beto Leadership Award at the Concordia
University Austin graduation on May 13. This newly-established award,
honoring the leadership and work of Dr. George Beto, is to recognize
individuals who model servant leadership in both their church and community.
Dr. Beto served his church and community with great dedication, intelligence
and grace. After being ordained as a Lutheran pastor, Dr. Beto joined the
faculty of Concordia Lutheran College in Austin, Texas, where he served for
twenty years. He was an instructor, mentor, guide and eventually President
of the college. Under his leadership, the institution moved from being a
high school to a junior college in addition to becoming racially integrated
and co-educational. From Concordia, Dr. Beto was called to serve as the
president of Concordia Seminary in St Louis for three years. Following
that, he was named the Director of the Texas Department of Corrections,
which he headed for ten years before stepping down and accepting a position
as Distinguished Professor of Corrections at Sam State University's
Institute of Contemporary Corrections and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Beto
retired in 1991 after almost 52 years of service to his church and
community. He died in December of 1991.
The Reverend Dr. George J. Beto was a model of Christian leadership
through-out his life. He exemplified the mission of Concordia University,
which is to develop Christian leaders. He was a consummate example of a
servant leader always seeking to serve rather than be served.
We are happy that Concordia University recognized these qualities in
President Linderman who has exemplified Christian leadership for more than
40 years in the ministry - as a parish pastor, United States Army Chaplain,
District Vice President and District President. He also was a student at
Concordia at the time Dr. Beto was President.
Please join all of us here at the District Office in offering
congratulations to President Linderman on receiving this award.
