Opening Thoughts

1.jpg> In a recent sermon delivered by my senior pastor, he spoke the words,
"Most political speeches are forgotten minutes after they're delivered. A
few speeches are remembered a little longer. Some become absolute legends
because they string words together so eloquently that the more noble
elements of our character are stirred to greater courage and action."
President Kennedy's inaugural address is an example of such a speech. Do you
remember the impression of his closing words? "And so, my fellow Americans:
ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your
country."

My pastor continued to say that there must have been some reason for
President Kennedy to speak those words. Surely he would not have asked the
nation to do something it was already doing. Back then, just like now, just
like in every age and in every country, in every institution, people allowed
themselves to think they were put on this earth just to take everything they
could possibly get. Human nature, corrupted by sin, always finds it easier
to ask, "What can my country do for me?" and along with that question, "What
can everybody else do for me?" It is contrary to our nature to ask, "What
can I do for my country?" That is why we need to be reminded regularly to
ask such questions.

Because the Spirit of God lives in us as His people, Scripture tells us that
God is not far from us. In Him we live, move, and have our being. Because
the Spirit of God lives in us, we know that serving others is good as much
for us as it is for them. Even though we know and believe this truth, at
times we fail to act on it because our sinful nature keeps telling us that
the opposite is true; the good life is not about serving others but being
served.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Savior of the world emptied himself and
took on the form of a servant. He did it all so that we might be one with
Him and with our Father in heaven. For our sake, he served us. For his sake,
we serve him. Through both, the world is made a better place for God's glory
and our good.

Reviewing The Servant

The True Essence of Leadership
<http://www.ni.lcms.org/ministries/congregation/Artwork/JimHaack.jpg>

Like many of my DCE colleagues, I read a lot of books in my undergraduate
and graduate classes. Nearly all of the books dealing with administration
and leadership contained lists of qualities or behaviors that make one a
good leader. Often the lists included some "how to" information that one
could tailor to his/her unique setting.

I'm not going to complain about those books, because they did some good. But
now, as I reflect back, they remind me more of math books than "people"
books. Lots of formulas: "Display quality X and combine with action Y and
you will become Z leader."

A few decades later I find myself involved in KINDLE. One of the books we
read in KINDLE is "The Servant." Let me explain why this book is so
different, and why I think you should read it and pass it on to potential
leaders in your parish.

This book is the fictional story, told in the First Person, of John Daily, a
sort of Everyman, one of the rats in the race we often find ourselves
running. He's doing well financially but not relationally or spiritually.
Something is missing. And then he goes on a retreat at a monastery on the
Lake Michigan shore, along with a Pastor, an Army drill sergeant, a school
principal, a women's basketball coach, and a head nurse. We see a little of
ourself in each of these retreatants--and a lot of ourself in John.

The "teacher" at this retreat is Brother Simeon. We find out early in the
book what brought Simeon (his monastic name) out of the multi-million-
dollar corporate position of his earlier life, to the simple, regimented but
contemplative monastic life.

As Simeon leads his retreatants by example and by the Socratic teaching
method during their sessions, we fit right in. We see ourselves there. We
listen in on the often frustrating conversations among this diverse group of
individuals. And we are convicted.

"The Servant" is not about leadership training. It is about leadership
development. By the end of the retreat (the end of the book, actually), you
will be convicted, uplifted, and empowered to fulfill your calling and
vocation, if you internalize and act upon what John Daily and the other
retreatants (they are you) have learned.

After you've read this book, buy copies for those people whom God sends your
way. The ones whose leadership potential is ripe for lifelong development.

>From the book "The Servant: A Simple Story About the True Essence of
Leadership," by James C. Hunter, 1998, Prima Publishing, Rocklin, CA 95677

Current Research

  <http://www.ni.lcms.org/ministries/congregation/Artwork/ChristineRoss.jpg>
Intentional Intergenerational Ministry
for the 21st Century

One generation shall commend Your works to another and set forth Your mighty
deeds. -- Psalm 145:4

What do you think of when you read the words Intergenerational Ministry?
# 1. I thought there was a generation gap, how do I bring generations
together?
# 2. It's for small congregations that have too few people for age-specific
ministries.
# 3. It's a part of family ministry.
# 4. It's a growing philosophy of ministry within the church today.
A fifth option, "all the above," was my answer when beginning doctoral
research on intergenerational ministry (IM). The research discoveries
brought both surprise and excitement regarding the potential for
intergenerational ministry in the church today.

THE RESEARCH CONGREGATIONS
The dissertation research was a qualitative study of churches committed to
intergenerational ministry. I was surprised to find many congregations
involved in IM and four congregations which allowed an outsider to hang out
for three days to observe, interview, question and read old newsletter
articles! The congregations remain anonymous, but are described below by
their location.

Resource Review

<http://www.ni.lcms.org/ministries/congregation/Artwork/CEL-newgilbert.JPG>
Title of Resource: Growing in Christ: High School Curriculum
Weblink: http://sundayschool.cph.org/
<http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?t=7uvy7ybab.0.vcdmo8bab.avpgsxbab.86&ts=S0217&p=http%
3A%2F%2Fsundayschool.cph.org%2F>
Author: Concordia Publishing House
Publisher: Concordia Publishing House
Date Published: 2006
Number of Pages: 96
Cost: $12.75

Purpose:
This curriculum looks at the book of Genesis over 13 weeks, with the main
focus being a comprehensive High School Curriculum. The lessons in this
curriculum work well in a small group format or in a classroom. The
discussion that is generated from the topics provide a structured reflection
time for the students as they reflect on God's Word in their lives. This
curriculum has four main sections: Opening, God Speaks, We Live, and
Closing. Each lesson starts with two options, use the opening that is
provided or go to sundayschool.cph.org/w5 and select an opening that
includes current events that have impacted students.

Issues Addressed:
The curriculum addresses the book of Genesis and looks at many of the
stories that shape the viewpoint of God at creation. The lessons are packed
with helpful teacher hints that give insight into phrases or concepts that
may be unfamiliar in the Biblical narrative. The lesson begins with an
Opening that addresses the Biblical story in a current situation and then
there is a transition into the Bible where we have God Speaks. There are
discussion questions that reflect on what was read in the Bible. The next
section is We Live, and there is a reproducible student page that is given
to all of the students. The student worksheet goes into greater depth for
the Biblical Story found in Genesis and how it also relates in the New
Testament. Within this section, the Law and Gospel are presented in a way
that shows how God is still working in the student's lives today. The last
section of the lesson is the Closing that usually focuses on a Liturgy link
and suggests that the class sing an appropriate hymn.

Major Assertions:
This curriculum is based on an assumption that the Sunday School class has
55-60 minutes to complete the lesson. This curriculum uses many references
to both the Old and New Testament once the main story in Genesis is
presented. This lesson has not been created for students who are unfamiliar
with the Bible. Another assumption is that the class is musically talented
and enjoys singing hymns from the liturgy at the end of class.

Usefulness:
This curriculum does a nice job of providing a comprehensive look at some
traditional Biblical stories. The lessons are useful in that they encourage
the application of Biblical stories to current events and to the lives of
the students. The w5online opening activity was especially useful with the
combination of the current event presented and the discussion questions that
provided a smooth transition into the Biblical story.

I found this Bible Study to work amazingly well in starting the Opening with
the large group and then reading the main Bible Story from Genesis as a
group. The next step was to transition into the student page by having
students work in groups of 3 or 4 to answer the questions. Then, as part of
the structured reflection, we would come together as a large group and
discuss their insights on the questions presented.

Reading/Viewing Difficulty
The lessons are presented in a user friendly manner for the instructor. The
difficulty in the lesson is properly presenting the Law and Gospel concepts
that engage the students. The discussion questions must be rephrased at
times because they may be too difficult for the students, especially those
who do not have a good working knowledge of biblical understanding.

Recommendations:
This curriculum is a good addition for a Sunday School. The Biblical message
gives a fresh look at traditional Bible stories and is a great starting
point for an instructor. However, each lesson should be customized to fit
the uniqueness of the students present in the ministry. The lessons
presented give a good base to begin, but the instructor needs to be creative
in order to make it relevant and get the most impact out of their time with
the students.

Greetings in the name of our newborn King!

As we enter this new year, it is my prayer that God bless each of you as you
seek to serve Him and His church!

Each year the DCE Network of LEA hosts the DCE Leadership Summit. This year
the Summit will be held February 1 and 2 at the LCMS International Center in
St. Louis. The purpose statement for the 2007 Summit has been set as: "To
review DCE Certification requirements, determine the importance of
standardizing such requirements, and develop post- certification continuing
education guidelines for DCEs." In addition to a discussion around this
purpose statement, those present will take time to meet with several
Synodical officials in an effort to build relationships between DCEs and
those serving us at the Synodical level.

Those participating at this year's Summit will include the DCEnet Leadership
Team, Directors from the six Concordia University DCE Programs, Dr. Renee
Schoer of Valparaiso University, Dr. Steve Christopher, and several District
Executives who have responsibilities within their districts related to DCEs.

Thank you for the opportunity and the privilege to represent you at this
important gathering. I ask that you remember this event in your prayers,
asking God to guide us in the direction of DCE ministry into the future.

May God richly bless you as you continue to serve Him!

Concordia DCE Program Update

  <http://www.ni.lcms.org/ministries/congregation/Artwork/DCEDirectors.jpg>
Students in our DCE programs are encouraged to participate in various
service projects throughout their time at Concordia. For example, Concordia
University Chicago has an annual Spring Break trip to the Appalachian
mountains in Virginia to help local residents with home repairs, building,
etc. This coming spring will mark the 10th trip for students at CUC and well
over 300 students have been involved in this service opportunity in the past
10 years. Other students have also been involved in local service projects
in the Concordia community as well as hurricane relief efforts in New
Orleans and international service trips.

District News

In October , 2006, lay leaders and professional workers convened for the
first ever Ablaze! Convocation in Wichita, Kansas. I was a part of a
planning team that coupled the annual Professional Church Workers Conference
with a new gathering of lay leaders from throughout the District.

For the Convocation itself, I personally witnessed 500-600 men and women of
God of the Kansas District who came together for holy conversations around
THE mission of the church. These holy huddles were a part of a process
called "open space technology." Facilitator, Reverend Dick Gahl, challenged
participants to surface ministry issues related to the central question,
"How can the Kansas District better share the saving message of Jesus Christ
locally and beyond?"

The Open Space issue groups, from Saturday, October 14th, ultimately
produced the Ablaze! Kansas Idea Book for congregations and schools seeking
to expand their on-going commission to reach out and make disciples for
Christ in their communities. This resource contains thirty seven discussion
topics under these general themes: motivating your congregation; ministry to
members; family ministry; children and youth ministry; group ministry;
personal outreach; and, community outreach

These group reports are provided to stimulate ideas in individual
congregations and schools. Each of the group reports are intended to be
customized to meet the gifts of the people and the situation into which the
congregation and/or school has been placed in God's mission. Groups are
encouraged to use discretion when attempting to adopt any group report!
(Please access this resource by visiting the Kansas District web site -
www.kslcms.org/ablaze).

Dick shared that a friend of his once said: "We can spend all of eternity
worshipping God, learning from His Word, praying to Him, encouraging and
building up one another. But only here and now do we have the chance to
reach lost people for Christ."

How about you and your District? Are you ready to continue to meet the
challenge of reaching out to the lost? If we in the Kansas District can be
of further service to you, please feel free to begin by contacting me at
