Mentoring of Ethnic Leaders Vicar Wichieng Wetnyangran has completed the
14th of 15 study courses of the Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology
(EIIT) leading to ordination as a pastor of the Lutheran Church-Missouri
Synod. We congratulate Wichieng on his steady progress toward the goal of
becoming a servant of the Message of God. Wichieng will be a member of the
first EIIT graduating class in May 2007.
Manos Cariñosas / "Caring Hands" Mission A strong witness of the Message
of God in action was received by over 700 people in Somoto, Nicaragua during
the annual Dental, Medical, and Optical Servant Event, June 10-18, 2006.
The enthusiastic group of 29 men and women worked together with local
Christians to bring compassionate care to many in need. Manos Cariñosas
celebrated its 16th consecutive year of mission ministry in Latin America
and continues to enjoy a dynamic partnership with La Misión Cristiana en
Nicaragua, a church-planting ministry supported by Lutheran Church-Canada.
Prayer and planning for the 2007 mission trip is underway. We thank the
servant event participants for their faithful service and all who support
this mission effort with prayers and gifts.
Recovery Ministry Leticia Pierce, Coordinator for Recovery Ministry
(Spanish-speaking), was honored as a recipient of the Jefferson Award for
Public Service in special ceremonies which took place in Washington, D.C.,
June 19-21, 2006. In 1972, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, U.S. Senator Robert
Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard founded the American Institute for Public Service, a
501 (c)(3) public foundation, to establish a Nobel Prize for public and
community service - The Jefferson Awards for Public Service. Awards are
presented at the national and local ("unsung heroes") levels. By honoring
the Jefferson Awards recipients, the American Institute for Public Service
seeks to inspire others to become involved in community and public service.
Leticia was presented her award certificate by Senator John Cornyn, Texas,
in Senate chambers together with other award winners and their respective
senators. A gala banquet hosted by the Jefferson Awards at Washington Union
Station was attended by others recognized for their accomplishments in the
public sector, including, Ellen Burstyn, Academy Award winning actress and
Teresa Heinz Kerry, Philanthropist. Peyton Manning, NFL Indianapolis Colts,
was one of 5 National Award winners and keynote speaker for the banquet.
The Message of God is at work through Leticia as she shares her strength and
hope leading others in a healing journey through the fellowship of
Christ-centered, Bible-based recovery. We are honored to enjoy ministry
partnership with Leticia and congratulate her for this prestigious award.
Church Planting - Cristo Rompió Las Cadenas Iglesia Luterana The Message
of God
is continually proclaimed in English and Spanish at 1500 Circle Park Blvd.
Bilingual Worship and Bible study attendance has grown to 30-40 in one year.
Three youth confirmations were celebrated on Mothers' Day. Over 60 children
attended the bilingual Vacation Bible School "¡Fiesta!" during the week of
June 26-30. ¡Mil gracias! - special thanks to Peace Lutheran Church, Hurst,
for decorations and supplies for our VBS. In addition to daily Bible
stories, singing, crafts, and snacks, participants learned traditional
Mexican folk dance from students and volunteers of our community partner,
Danza Cultural. CRLC enjoys resident community partnership with the
Volunteer Center of North Texas, Near Northside Partners Council, Tarrant
County Juvenile Services, Danza Cultural, Fort Worth ISD ESL classes for
adults, and CAPA - Fort Worth Police Department Clergy and Police Alliance.
These combined community outreach efforts impact the lives of hundreds of
individuals and families in Northside Fort Worth.
Pray to God for ...
New Ministry Initiatives
* God has begun to move us toward the establishment of a unique
Christ-centered, Bible-based support ministry for the families of
incarcerated men and women. This ministry would seek to serve the whole
family, including preschool-aged children. We have excellent human
resources and many prospective families. We need some facility repairs /
improvements and additional financial resources to further develop and
implement this effort. Please pray for "Familias Unidas."
* We are considering the expansion of Manos Cariñosas to include two
annual servant events. We have received an invitation to assist in the
construction of Martin Luther Chapel at the national ministry center located
in Chinandega, Nicaragua.
Financial Support The combined operating budgets of LINC TARRANT and
Cristo Rompió Las Cadenas Iglesia Luterana exceed $200,000. We are now
prayerfully seeking 500 individuals who are willing to give $500 per year to
support this growing ministry. We are grateful for our partnership with the
LCMS Texas District Board for Mission Administration, local congregations
and individuals. Please consider making a gift or a pledge in response to
this letter. LINC TARRANT operates under the LCMS Texas District. All
gifts are tax-deductible.
>From the Front Lines - St. Paul, Dallas Back-To-School Immunization &
Educational Experience Day - Report from Nancy Coleman
Saturday, July 22, 2006
S aturday was a beautiful day at St. Paul, clear sky with a slight morning
breeze over the metroplex. At 8:15 A.M., the worker bees (volunteers)
started filling the parking lot to complete the setup for the event of the
day. All participants were on hand, unloading and arranging the displays and
Dallas County Dept. of Human Services was in the mix, putting their
immunization area in order to greet those in need of back to school
readiness (immunization shots).
As advertised, we were ready to begin promptly at 10:00 A.M. Paul Jones II
opened the event with a prayer and blessed everyone. Rena Jones acted as our
hostess, greeting and welcoming everyone to St. Paul. Our youth were on hand
to direct arriving visitors to the various booths. Our man about the campus,
John Criss, was ever present with his digital camera.
The turnout for the immunization was not what we had wished for, however,
there were seventy-eight immunizations given. It was a brisk pace throughout
the day with adults paying lots of attention to the nutrition and the
pharmacologist area. UT-Southwestern University had a booth adjacent to the
pharmacology area with material on "maintaining the brain."
The Book Booth was set up outside under a canopy and was a beehive of
activity throughout the event. There were books and magazines on hand that
covered many subjects along with school supplies. Thanks to Mr. & Mrs. C.
Walter Williams, we had an abundance of school supplies for our youth.
The College/Career Advisors were well organized and we had representatives
from six colleges and universities. Our counseling session, led by Mrs.
Cathen Jones and Mrs. Charlotte Watson was superb. This session covered
junior high, high school and college freshmen students. These young people
were really into education and had many questions to ask. After the
counseling concluded, a drawing was held for those attending this session.
One young lady from the community who attended the session was blessed with
a winning ticket covering a Compaq Notebook computer. Others won gift
certificates from Walmart, a USB flash drive and a digital camera. There
were happy faces all around. It would have been wonderful to have had a gift
for each attendee at this session but we would have needed twenty-five or
more gifts. These gifts were purchased from monies raised by Nancy Coleman
through an appeal letter to various friends of St. Paul.
Oh yes, the food served throughout the day was great as we tried to stay
within the health guideline. There were a total of 150 people at the event.
One thing was learned from this event and that was St. Paul needs a building
to handle this type of event (which we hope will be ongoing) as we do
further community outreach projects.
The event concluded at 2:15 P.M. and the cleanup crew was waiting to tidy
up. We had a great time although we were a bit worn toward the end but the
camaraderie, fellowship, and openness between members of St. Paul and
visitors was over the top. It was a good feeling to be tired as we worked to
build God's Kingdom in this place and at this time.
CAMPUS MINISTRY SURVEY CARD ONLINE!
The campus ministry survey card is on line in a PDF format that can be
completed directly in the opened window. There are four forms to each
8.5x11.5 sheet just as there have been on the hard copy form from previous
years. When typing the information into the form, the information appears
as typed. When you get to the section that asks what year the student is
in, you must tap the space bar in the appropriate check box and an "x" will
appear. If you need to remove it, just tap the space bar again and it will
be removed.
Once you have completed the form, you must print the form before proceeding
any further. Once the form is closed the information is gone. The form
cannot be saved for future reference. This is the way this program works
and we cannot change it. Once you have printed the form, click on the
"clear form" button/bar and begin a new set of information. Copy and paste
this link into your web browser for accessing the form.

If you would prefer to receive the form as a word document attachment that
can be used as a form, that once completed can be saved and emailed back to

College is a critical time for students and early and personal contact is
critical for campus ministry effectiveness. Campus ministers want to extend
and continue your ministry to your students as they come to their
universities and colleges - to offer them a community of their peers who
share their faith tradition.
Reminders:
* Only report students leaving the home area who will not be able to
attend their home church while away at school.
* Include the city location and the full name of the school the
student will be attending.
* Home addresses and phone numbers are very important so that campus
ministry leaders can contact students right away. Cell phone numbers are
even better if they are easy for you to get. If not please include the home
phone number.
Mail completed forms to the District Office: Attn: Carole Stevenson, 7900
E. Highway 290, Austin, TX 78724. If you have any questions please call
Carole at (800) 951-3478.
STEWARDSHIP MANUALS AVAILABLE
We still have a number of the LCMS produced Stewardship notebooks
(Congregational Stewardship Workbook 2000) that were originally sold for
something in excess of $90 in 2000
If your congregation does not have one, we can ship one for you for $12 to
cover postage, etc. Just let Paul know via email or phone if you would like
one for your congregation.
Lutheran Service Book Workshops
Are the members of your congregation aware that there will be workshops
introducing the new hymnal, Lutheran Service Book, in your area this fall?
We have prepared an easy-to-print bulletin insert that you can make
available to everyone in your congregation. You can download it at:
http://lcms.org/LSBWorkshopInsert <http://lcms.org/LSBWorkshopInsert>
This fall the LCMS Commission on Worship and Concordia Publishing House are
offering over 280 workshops throughout the United States and Canada to
introduce the new Lutheran Service Book (LSB). Each workshop will be three
hours in length and will be held from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Saturday
mornings.
Workshops have been carefully scheduled so that most congregations will have
choices as to which dates to attend a workshop in their area. These
introductory workshops are designed to appeal to a broad range of
individuals, including:
· pastors
· church organists and pianists
· choir directors
· Sunday School teachers
· church secretaries
· members of the Church Council and Board of Elders
· other interested leaders and lay members
· anyone who loves to sing!
In addition to highlighting both what is familiar and what is new in LSB,
trained workshop presenters will lead participants in actually using many of
LSB's worship resources during the workshop.
Participants will also receive "A Guide to Introducing LSB," containing not
only the materials that are presented during the workshop but also a number
of helpful resources and suggestions for introducing Lutheran Service Book
in a variety of congregational settings. This guide will become a valuable
tool in the coming years as LSB is introduced at the local level.
The cost for the workshop is $20 per person. This includes:
* a copy of Lutheran Service Book-Pew Edition (an $18.50 value)-
allowing participants to "thumb" through the book (the first time for many)
and begin the process of experiencing this significant worship resource.
* instructional sessions with the presenter and the musician who will
lead the participants in singing.
* a copy of "A Guide to Introducing LSB."
Workshop registration and payment by credit card can be made by clicking on
the link below.

Thrivent Builds - North Texas Partnership with Habitat in South Dallas
>From Karen LiBassi, Thrivent Builds Specialist:
Set your alarm! Mark your calendar! Grab a friend and dust off your tool
belt! It's time to join Lutherans from across the metroplex to build 4
Habitat for Humanity homes in South Dallas with the Thrivent Builds project.
You can help build these homes for deserving, low-income families in our
community by:
· Recruiting a team of volunteers from your church to come out on a
Saturday to work - no experience necessary!
· Signing up to bring your staff to the worksite for a Teambuilding
Day.
· Generating financial support to help raise 10% of the construction
expenses in partnership with Thrivent Builds.
This exciting opportunity to serve is possible because of an international
partnership between Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial for
Lutherans.
Thrivent Builds will build over 300 homes nationwide this year and because
of their $105 million commitment, they are the largest single supporter of
Habitat.
Together, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans and Habitat for Humanity are
working to eradicate poverty housing around the world, changing lives and
transforming communities.
Volunteer Build Dates for Congregations:
Saturdays, August 26 - October 21
Teams of 20-25 volunteers are needed on each of the 4 homes every Saturday
A Day for Clergy and Staff
Wednesdays: September 27 and October 4
Sign-up to bring your entire staff out to the Habitat site for a day of
service and fun. Team building is a great by-product of a construction day
with Habitat for Humanity. We even have a debriefing tool for your group if
you want to have a discussion back at the office and continue building
solidarity. There is something for everyone to do at the worksite, even for
those who are more used to "hammering" a keyboard than a
2 x 4!

Fan Into Flame Update - from John Mitchener - Coordinator
Participating Area A congregations continue to seek gifts daily. Many have
secured gifts from pastors and lay leadership to build momentum prior to
their first public announcement, Announcement Sunday. Several of those will
be happening in two weeks.
Currently, there are fifteen (15) active congregations of the twenty-five
(25) that will participate in Fan into Flame. These churches have
collectively raised $94,900 from thirty six (36) lead gifts. These gifts
have come from pastors and their lay leadership teams primarily. They will
now continue weekly fundraising activity, which includes:
* Securing gifts from all volunteers members;
* Visiting key mission minded congregation members to educate them
about Fan into Flame and to ask them for a specific pledge;
* Preparing a mailing with a brochure and gift request; and
* Holding Commitment Sunday.
While many congregations in Area C have concluded their campaign activity,
some are still participating in Fan into Flame. These seven (7) churches
collectively raised $76,124 from sixty-eight (68) gifts. They will be
finishing their fundraising effort with their final campaign activity,
Commitment Sunday, in the weeks ahead.
There have been twenty-nine (29) congregations that have participated in Fan
into Flame in this Area. These churches have combined to raise $398,863
from 286 gifts. Area C's congregations will continue to grow as other
congregations begin their local campaign throughout the summer and fall.
Congregations in both Area B and Area D are encouraged to begin the some
important steps prior to seeking gifts for Fan into Flame. The campaign
will begin in Area B in September, 2006 and Area D in early 2007. These
steps include:
* Undertake an Ablaze! education period using elements from the
Ablaze! Start-Up Kit;
* Speak with key lay leaders to formalize your congregations
participate in Fan into Flame;
* Identify for to five lay leaders to help invite members to support
Fan into Flame; and
* Choose an appropriate campaign plan for your congregation (guide
book available).
In order to make to make Fan into Flame a true success, the participation
and support of all congregations in this program is vitally important.
Leadership from all levels across the Synod and from the Texas District
encourages you to present the goals and objectives of this historic campaign
to your membership, inviting their support. To learn more about being part
of this program, please speak to your pastor or call Ken Hennings in the
Texas District office at 512-926-4272.
